Castellare di Castellina
A well-regarded estate famous for its bird-illustrated labels and sustainable farming.
Our verdict
Every vintage since 1977 has carried a different endangered bird on the label — nearly fifty years of it now — and the estate genuinely farms around that idea, banning the chemicals and hunting that threaten the birds it is naming. Owner Paolo Panerai has run it since the late 1970s; Sodi di San Niccolò, a Sangiovese-Malvasia Nera blend, is the wine that put the estate on serious lists. The label collecting is half the reason to visit.
