A large, well-known Chianti family estate with approachable tours near Castellina.
Our verdict
An eleventh-century monastery where, the story goes, monks planted 1,001 olive trees in the year 1001 to mark the millennium — some are still bearing fruit, and go into the estate's own oil. The Cecchi family has made wine since 1893 and bought Villa Cerna in 1962, restoring the villa and building a modern cellar at the foot of the hill. Sits on the first hill you reach driving north from Siena into Chianti Classico, a genuine gateway stop.
