Our verdict

No menu: you pay a flat forty euros and the owner brings four courses built from what came out of his garden that morning, on a terrace looking down into Montefioralle's vineyards. It is the closest thing on this list to eating at someone's house. Booking is the catch — there is no easy online system, so call ahead or risk being turned away at the door.
