Our verdict
Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi runs this from a fortress his family built in the seventh or eighth century — thirty-seven generations back, by his own count. The estate turned organic in 2006 and certified in 2010, and its Vin Santo has a reputation that outstrips the more famous reds. A serious history lesson wrapped around a serious tasting, near the Romanesque church of San Marcellino south of Gaiole.
